Hey Guys. I am thinking about turning my empty 10g tank into a nano reef.
I wanted it to house 2 firefish and some kind of shrimp.

Anyone have any ideas?

Also, what do I need to buy to set it up?

I've been doing quite a bit of research over the past year or so. Alot of places say that a small saltwater system is not as hard as people say it is. Also, what is the natural filter thingy? I know live rock/live sand is a filter, but does that make it so that you don't need a mechanical filter? I'm just curious, because I cannot find many saltwater articles. I REALLY want saltwater, but I still don't even know if I can get it. But, always good to know before you start. So, who can help me? I know there are many saltwater people on this site, so speak up!! smile.gif

Go as big as you can for the tank.

I am thinking of converting my 72g bow into a saltwater tank and moving all of the fish from it into a 55g.

That'd be a good idea. You couldn't even keep 2 Firefish in a 10 gallon, anyway. Yes, you'll need some form of mechanical filtering. I suggest a canister or wet/dry filtering system. They're kinda pricey, but well worth it. Also, a sump of some sort, whether one that you've bought, or made your own out of a plastic RubberMaid bucket, which is what I do. The ones you buy are super expensive, and you can make your own from PVC pipe, hardware supplies, and a RubberMaid tub pretty cheap and easy. A 72 gallon bowfront would be an amazing saltwater aquarium. You could get some nice tangs, and butterflyfish, and goby/blenny. What are you planning on, though? FOWLR? Reef? Let us know.

I am going to do FOWLR in the 72g bowfront. I am going to get 70lbs. of live sand and 100 lbs. of live rock. For filtration I am going to get a Marineland HOT Mag 350. For fish I want to get firefish, clownfish, tangs, and some others, not sure exactly what. Total cost is about $500 to convert it from fw to sw. All of the fw fish are going to my lfs, exept for my Tetras and my Paradisefish.

When I say total, I am not including fish or inverts.

Go for it. reef/beerchug.gif I just upgraded from my 75 gallon that was ten years old to a 125, my blonde naso has lots of swimming room, just got him about three weeks ago, he's three inches, a friend of mine has a nano and it's so easy to do water changes, he does a little every week, to me it's like changing a glass of water.

I can't wait to get the tank started!!!!

Have any of y'all heard of a Supreme Skilter 400 Power Filter? It is supposed to be a power filter and protein skimmer all in one. About $45 for it. Is it any good?

NeonTetraFan- 07-21-2005
I came up with my stocking plan.

Fish:
1 Blue Tang
2 Clownfish
5 Firefish

Rock/Sand:
Live Sand: 60lbs.
Live Rock: 100lbs.

Inverts:
Need advice on what to get!

Is my tank going to be overstocked?

TidusIsTheOne- 07-22-2005
Your tank will not be overstocked, you can get a few others, actually, but not too much more. Couple Goby's would be nice. For inverts, a tank-cleaner package wouldn't go amiss. Nor would a couple starfish. You sure you can get 100lbs. of live rock and 70 lbs. of live sand for under 500$? Where you buyin' it?! Also, it's not too good to buy the two-in-one deals, even though they are tempting. A filter and skimmer for 45$? Doesn't sound like a good product to me. wet/dry filteration or a sump would be my first choice, hand down. For a skimmer, I woujld suggest the bak-pak twin for a tank that large. They're not too expensive, clean easy, and work well. Good luck and keep us posted.

100lbs. of live rock on aquabid for $250. 60 lbs. of live sand at Petco: $70... Also, there is a canister filter on eBay for less than $100. Jebo something... And for a skimmer, I think I am going to get a seaclone 100.

Sounds like a good plan. Be thrifty, you'll get further in life ;-) This is the word of Ross.
