Well my bettas that had ich never rubbed against anything even though thats a symtom. I knew for sure that they had it though, and sure enough after i treated for ich it went away.

I think my fish have a mystery disease.

Flukes (Gyrodactylus and dactylogyrus)- Flukes are the most commonly found parasite on koi and goldfish. High numbers can cause serious damage. Symptoms include flashing, gasping at the surface, frayed fins, and death. Most cases of ulcer disease are preceded by fluke infestations. Treatment options in order of preference.

My fish dont always show all the symptoms of an illness but generally there is something that tips me off, If you have a dig cam, maybe take a pic and take it into your LFS and ask them what they think
