I wouldnt put just 3 neons in because that would be stressful on them since they are a schooling fish, im sure the tank being overstocked is just about as bad an idea as having just a few of a schooling fish.
Isnt the rule of thumb to have even numbers of schooling fish anyways?

As stated above, yes they are a schooling fish but it does not have to be even or odd numbers. My point is, I would not have more than that in such a small tank. I was stating what you could hold in that tank. I think your looking at it the wrong way. We are all stating that we feel that your possibly overstocking your tank. We are just offering opinion and it is up to you to make your own decision.

No, this would not cause stress to them. Your incorrect with this assumption.

Acually Bob, you are incorrect. Neons must have at least 5 in a school AND 10 gallons or more of water. It WILL stress them.

Bob - The rule of thumb is only with a larger tank, as for swimming space is the issue here.

3 Neon just doesnt seem fair on the school, have you ever seen a classroom with only 3 students in it
