There is 100% no doubt in my mind that danio's are the most hardy beginner fish out there for a beginner.

After that, I would possibly suggest a betta.

For saltwater tanks, the blue-green chromis is the most hardy beginner fish for newbies in my opinion.

Bettas a the best begginer fish and you can mix females together. Or have some fun with a 10 gal with one male betta and a bunch of little neon fish. Its so fun watching the betta interact with them but can never cath them!

I would agree with Danios as being
one of the hardiest beginner fish,
Guppies (due to inbreeding) and German blue rams
I find to be not so easy. smile.gif

Zebra Danios..hands down the best begginner fish. You can do anything to these fish and they JUST WON'T DIE! These days people are even dipping them in neon dye and calling them Glow Fish. These fish can take anything.

Glow Fish are danios that have had their DNA altered, not dyed.

I second that cbcinnie.

Some Glow fish, infact MANY and MOST Glow Fish do have altered DNA. However, many stores are using the Danio's resiliance to death to their advantage, and many danios are, sadly, being dipped in neon dye. here's an excerpt from an online article.

"Several hundred of the hardy fish, which can survive in brackish or fresh water, are being brought in by aquarium supplies wholesaler Adec Trading and Services, the sole distributor for Taikong products here. They will be sold at about 300 aquarium outlets here once the go-ahead is given, said Mr John Koo, Adec's managing director.

The fish are also expected to enter the United States market later this month, and Taikong said it will be producing more than 100,000 of the fish monthly. So far, only the neon-green version has been put on sale. But later versions will be produced and swimming in new, non-toxic and pernament dye, by hopefully the end of 2004."

See? Many of these poor fish are infact be dyed. I shouldn't say that they are being "dipped", however. They are actually hatched from eggs in the dye, and survive in it untill they are sold. What a horrible thing to do to a fish!

Always stickin' up for myself reef/beerchug.gif cheers

Thanks for that very interesting article. It is awful to know that people accually do that to fish.

TidusIsTheOne- 12-07-2005
Indeed. Fish do seem to take a beating, don't they? Especially betta's..in those poor little shot glasses they sell them in in the store! Horrible!
